Department of Tamil

Tamil is one of the few living classical languages and has an unbroken literary tradition of over two millennia. The high level of diglossia exhibited by Tamil and the prestige accorded to classical Tamil have resulted in much of the vocabulary and forms of modern Tamil language. The classical language also forms an important part of Tamil-medium education. The ordinary form of the modern language used in speech and writing, in contrast, has undergone significant changes. Tamil is one of the few living classical languages with a two millennia old literary and cultural heritage. Further, Tamil is a phonetic language and is subject to well defined rules of elision and euphony.

About the Department

The Department of Tamil offers an introspective knowledge on tradition and culture. It mainly focuses on language and literature of Tamil and provides comparative analytical knowledge on various world language and literature. The department is paying keen attention to thrust fields such as Sangam literature, Grammar modern literature and culture.

The curriculum was made to provide mind-blowing theoretical base through an updated method of teaching. The Department of Tamil currently offers Under Graduate Course. The learners are foregrounded an ample opportunity and skills-oriented practices. They are highly encouraged to participate in seminars and conferences in order to magnify their global and practical knowledge. The department is making all earnest efforts to trigger potentials of students through co-curricular and extra curricular activities.
