History of the college

Education is a key to meet the global progress. Education plays a pivotal role and paves the way to reach our highest potential. The modern, developed and industrialised world is running on the wheels of education to survive in the competitive world.

The Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru.Mr. M. K. Stalin, made a historic announcement on the launching of 20 new Government Arts and Science Colleges. One of these was the Government Arts and Science College, Alangudi, (an institution of higher education established pursuant to Government of Tamil Nadu Higher Education (G1) Ordinance (Status) No. 228, Dated: 19.11.2021). Through his persistent efforts, Honourable minister for Environment & Climate Change Board Thiru.Shiva V. Meyyanathan worked for the establishment of this college of which was a long pending and repeated request of the residents of Alangudi.

This college was opened along with 20 other new colleges through video conferencing mode by our Honourable Chief Minister. A site in Keezhathur close to Nadiyamman Temple is identified and foundation stone was laid by our Honourable minister for Environment & Climate Change Board Thiru.Shiva V. Meyyanathan for the construction of new building.

The new building of the college was opened by Honourable Chief Minister of Tamilnadu Thiru.M.K.Stalin through Video Conferencing mode on 16.7.2024.

The goals and objectives of the college are to improve the quality of teaching-learning process to national standards and promote more academic activities that impart knowledge and skill. It also strives to encourage research activities among the faculties and students in the college. Apart from imparting quality education the college continuously attempts to mould the students through Co-Curricular and Extra-Curricular activities.

The present team, under the leadership of Dr. K. Vijaya, consists of 5 well–qualified and competent permanent teaching faculties (4 on deputation), 10 temporary full time teaching faculties and 3 non – teaching faculties with an overall student strength of 207.

Alangudi Government Arts and Science College is affiliated to Bharathidasan University and offers five frontier disciplines: Tamil, Commerce, Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science. As the college is still in its early stages, it currently offers only five undergraduate courses.
